Non-Ontario Birds / Gatineau Pine Grosbeak
« on: November 19, 2020, 02:48:55 pm »

Pine Grosbeaks are on the move also. I had 5 new year species today (in November!) as I also went to see the Tundra Bean-Goose at Nolan Quarry near Ottawa where I also saw Barnacle Goose, Ross's Goose and Cackling Goose.

Behaviour / Song Sparrows bullying baby Cardinal
« on: October 05, 2020, 07:02:33 pm »
First I noticed a Song Sparrow sitting beside a recently fledged Cardinal (seems pretty late) for a while, then it was making some kind of feeding or pecking motion towards the Cardinal. Later another Song Sparrow joined and they were landing on the Cardinal's back and pulling its wing, and eventually the Cardinal moved a bit out of sight. Mama Cardinal was in the vicinity but didn't intervene, either she didn't notice or didn't care.

Yellow-bellied Cuckoo playing peekaboo

Merlin

Green Heron
Didn't need Shortsighted's time-consuming tactics for this one, it popped out of the vegetation when I startled it and posed nicely on a railing.

Migration Movements / Broad-winged Hawks
« on: September 18, 2020, 11:30:55 am »
Great Broad-winged Hawk migration this morning. About 450 migrating in less than an hour starting around 8:45 am. It's a good time to view them as they are not so high up yet. I don't know how the hawk counters get an accurate count as kettles were popping up in all directions and it's difficult to keep track of which one has been counted or not as they move.

This was in Elgin County about 5 km from the Lake Erie shore.

Migration Movements / Hawk migration in June?
« on: June 21, 2020, 02:07:01 pm »
I saw a Sharp-shinned Hawk today acting like a migrant, circling high up. I usually don't see them around this time of year either, so I guess it could be a very early or late migrant, despite the odd date.

I spotted a Spotted Turtle today in Elgin County, a first for me.

Behaviour / Confused juncos
« on: March 07, 2019, 10:26:23 pm »
Two times this winter I have accidentally disturbed a junco after dark, at the porch and in the carport. When disturbed, it flew around very erratically and confusedly, bumping into stuff and changing directions frequently. I guess it was sleeping and had a hard time getting its bearings after waking up suddenly.
