Title: Streetside woodlot, again
Post by: Shortsighted on September 13, 2021, 01:48:57 pm
A portion of this morning’s escort walk (not a walk with a hooker) shadows a woodlot and it was as quiet, perhaps dead is more fitting, as it usually presents itself. I was not expecting a sighting although I still walk along the curb next to the woodlot instead of using the sidewalk on the other side of the street. That way, if I see something interesting I can pull my camera from the basket attached to the front of my father’s walker. Half way down the woodlot I spotted some movement that arched from the bushes over the street and then immediately back to the protection of the woodlot. I figured it must be a flycatcher. Turned out to be a juvenile Least flycatcher. Nothing else appeared for the remainder of the walk.

While walking along the curb next to the neighbourhood woodlot I noticed hectic twitching amongst the leaves and soon spotted a warbler, and then another. I immediately retrieved my camera from my father’s walker basket, after finishing my mug of tea, and tried to capture a shot of the proximal warbler, ignoring its more distant cousin and not even allowing a moment to identify the species. Ya, like I should be so skilled to spontaneously identify a frenetic juvenile warbler under the height of excitement at fulfilling my destiny.
The light was subdued so I cranked the ISO to 1600, which is forbidden territory with my old camera and I almost immediately felt that I had over reacted. Despite the hasty adjustment the results were not too bad at all. Just then a car came down the street to spook the warbler. Then another car came by, and then another car came by and then a delivery truck and then a Centurion tank trundle by … OK, maybe it wasn’t exactly a Centurion, but you get the picture. THIS IS NOT A PARK!

I wish we can somehow speak the bird language and translate what you say to them, and the will be so surprised to know they have trigued such complexed train of thoughts.

And can I say juvi blackpoll is so hard to ID, I mean they don't resemble their fathers. Can I suggest a side to side contrast for spring and fall warblers? Anyone? I say  anyone but you know which ones I am begging here.

Dinu has already done this for the most common warblers. I even suggested a hologram-type double image effect using parallax to flash between images, but of course that would be impossible on a monitor. Besides, you can do it yourself with some research. Dinu can't do everything. He's only superhuman when connected to a lens. The rest of the time he's just a nice guy, albeit with a squint's understanding of the physical world.

I have a guidebook. But what fun would that be?
I can't do it with my warblers this year. Saw like 3 Fall species, and one of them was Yellow.  :'(

I mean how nice it would be to convince Steve and and Dave to also post theirs...

I've seen BH vireo at Amos pond and in the swampy area on the other side of the boundary road.

I bet is feels good to be the sole provider of pics on this site now. And what a killer pic that is. Love everything about it. I only had a RTH visiting yesterday.
