De-saturating all colours but one (retaining one colour in an otherwise B&W photo) is a feature of some cameras, even point-and-shoot models, and on occasion that mono-colour function can be useful if you have a playful nature. I find that red has the most utility but that may only represent a lack of imagination on my part.

The gridlock was probably due to a traffic accident
or a crime scene, for which the red-pass filter can
also be useful ... and gruesome.

These are amazing - I haven't ever tried this kind of filtering technique, quite an interesting effect.
