Hovering terns

I was showing some pictures to my students. And remembered the puzzle I had for these terns. The parent tern would be hovering over their baby for a long time. Not feeding, just hanging(literally) there talking to them. Why?

May be this way they can keep an eye of any approaching predator and attack them before they come close. Those are adorable baby tern photos.
