Greetings.
As so-called "animal rights" activists would just assume do away with hunting, as well as any keeping of any animal as a pet, I thought that perhaps some here might enjoy expressing some solidarity with the following cause:
The City of Toronto is about to pass a law that will ban all pets other than common dogs & cats. All animals not native to Canada will be banned, as well as birds, reptiles, fish, and non-dog-non-cat small mammals.
It is expected that if this law goes into effect, that surrounding cities will follow suit. As such, those people who have pets other than dogs & cats will look elsewhere for work & to live.
The final hearing to stop this from happening is December 1.
To learn how you can help to stop the ban, please contact the following persons:

Here is the response I received from Ellwood Epps about how the dealers will "verify" firearms purchased on and after Dec 1st.
-----Original Message-----
From: Stephen Redgwell Stephen:
Here is the process that I recieved..
(I had to phone the chief provincial firearms officer in BC to get it..)
The dealer phones the 1-800 transfer # and gives the following
info:
1. buyers name..
2. buyers fac number..
3. dealer s business number..
4. either custumers or my visa # to pay transfer fee of $25.00 After I give them this info they willl give me a transfer number which I
must record in my books... This is what I understand the process to be but I a very suspicious that
when I phone the number on Tuesday that they will start asking questions
about the firearm.. For the handguns the process is the same exept that all
of the info about the handgun is required, and they also authorize a transport number
on top of the transfer number and the customer can take the gun immediately..
DO YOU BELIEVE THIS??
I can't, but that is what they tell us.. I hpoe this info helps you... wes
sorry about spelling too i typed in a rush

In October 1997 my brother was out. It was about 20 celcius and calm.
Where he hunts there is a very picturesque ruined foundation and the
weather was mild and there was a nice sunset.
You could imagine. He's approaching the old
orchard that was near the homestead in full gear when he hears voices. Quietly he walks up to see two soulmates (man and woman) photographing
each other in the nude. Needless to say, he saw all of them and they
saw none of him.

Nick, Were hunting in Bowmanville,It was an interesting nite, the one I thought that would be real good, Well we hid in the fence row this time to try and catch them on there way back in to their roosting pond, Well needless to say It was'nt as good as I thought it would be, the birds were real high untill they were directly over the pond and then they would cup and set down on the pond, But I don't have permisson to that pond only the property beside it, It seems though that when the different groups of birds come in (say a doz.or so) that they could'nt take the pressure of the other birds not being there so up they went that was Sat. eve. and I have'nt been back since, Guess we were over hunting it maybe? SOOoooo I'm now back on the deer party hunting.

The geese have done the same in my area around Peterborough as we went back the other
day at the same time to see about 45 birds coming in while we were still setting out our
decoys! We only saw 4 flocks for the morning and they stopped around 9am. We are basicly new to
this corn field thing so any help would be great !!
Plan on going out this weekend and we'll be there early this time !

Hoyt, thanks for the post. WOW is all I can say. What a deer, and I see a lot of big ones doing articles for Big Buck magazine. It remains to be seen if it really does beat the Hanson buck, but it sure is impressive. The article says the rack has a 38 inch spread. They must be referring to outside spread, because if you look at where the ears would go, and a mature whitetails ears are about 17-19 inches across, the rack would appear to have an inside spread of around 27-30 inches. Still world class, by any means.
They also say the Hanson buck's spread is over 34 inches, but in reality, its 25 or 26. Don't know where they're getting their figures. I've heard Rompola's name before but can't quite place where. It will certainly be interesting to see how this shakes down. Thanks again.

We tried it today with the snow on the field and had great results! We hid under white sheets
among the decoys and when we saw the geese coming mad a few calls and the gesse came right in, within
about 15 yards and landed !! Had a great time having seven flocks come in ranging from 4 to about 30 birds. Has anyone else tried this technique and how did it work ?? Nick

In a nutshell, a verifier is an individual that will take information about you and your firearm, check it against a government generated database (CD) and obtain approval for the sale. This would be done through the use of a computer. Presently, the RCMP is contacting gunshops/organisations/individuals to act on the government's behalf. The problems with this system are too numerous to go into at length here. I suggest that you go to this website for a more detailed explanation. www.nfa.ca
As a gun owner, you should aquaint yourself with this program, as it will affect you regardless of whether or not you purchase another firearm. You will have to register the firearms that you presently own. I urge everyone to check out the NFA website for all the C-68 and related legislation and how it will impact on you. Safe Shooting! Its too bad that when they "ask" you to be a verifier and that you say "no" that at that time they point out to you the date when your licence is expiring.
I know of several instances where this is the case. Some have said they will think about it till they can figure out how to get off the hook and one that has contacted his lawyer regarding how he was being threatened. These instances were from shooting clubs if my source or my memory serves me. What a bunch of A*******!! Bob

Here is a link to a partial list of Ontario Gunshops. Please let them know you

already are, ask them to reconsider and tell them you're letting others

My hunting buddies and I were returning from our week's deer hunt up in area 57 on Saturday. As we approached Burleigh Falls (Hwy 28), OPP and the Ministry of Resources had set up a road block on both sides of Highway 28. There must have been at least 20 officers. It looked like they were looking for a fugitive. They stopped every vehicle. Those that were hunting were pulled over and seals and game checked. I am glad they were checking seals and game. It seems to me that we still have a lot of illegally shot game. The Conservation Officer who checked us out was a really polite and good guy. If you hunted legally there definitely was no problem. We do have to stop illegal poaching somehow. As for our hunt, we did manage to bag a young buck.

If it was the one near Tara, a 41 year old guy was accidently shot by a relative while hunting. OPP are still investigating. There was an incident near Kitchener, too. Guy got hit by a buckshot pellet that ricocheted off a tree branch. Pellet hit him in the rib cage but just penetrated the skin, travelled sideways around his body and ended up lodged under the skin on his back. Lucky it wasn't worse. He was out with a bunch of buddies in the first shotgun hunt in that area in over 20 years. LETS BE CAREFUL OUT THERE, GUYS! DON'T GIVE THE ANTI'S AMMUNITION!!

I bought one stand made by API that I really like. Ordered it from Bowhunter Discount Warehouse in Pennslyvania. I then made 3 others using plywood bases but similar in style to the API.
It was a climbing model but can be used fine with out the climbing part. Like mentioned here its hard to find trees without a few branches to go around.
The API had a seatbelt material strap to secure the stand near the seat area & just above the platform is a steel plate with a hole in it that you screw in a bolt with a "T" handle on it that helps keep the 'feet' from kicking out from the tree (and throwing you out!) when you lean out from it. This 2 point securing setup I used for the others I built cause it really makes them more secure & even feel safer.
The home built have chain I coated in liquid plastic (to make it quiet) instead of the seatbelt material. The seatbelt material works good but what happens if you climb into your stand in the dark (thats been hung in the tree for a few weeks) and you find out "later" that a porcupine likes the seatbelt material too!
I like to have them pre-hung so I can sneak into them. The chain is also great for padlocking the stand to the tree. Bob

Every year when the songbirds are flocking up for the trip south I seem to run into Robins that will fly branch to branch trying to figure out what I was sitting there in full camo with the headnet on. The chickadees always like to perch on my head or shoulder and can startle you at times when you least expect it.
While rifle hunting and walking along a trail I had a small bird, not sure the type, land on my gun barrel!
Where I bow hunt is close to ponds where I start the season duck hunting and often ducks & geese will fly by within easy range. Always thought that would put a new twist on duck hunting...using a tree stand! Once in awhile I even see deer!! ;-) Bob

We have not seen any rabbits in our area for some time Kern.

Hoyt, you are correct. I have a Loc-ON portable that I really like. It's got nylon ropes rather than chains, is really quiet to carry and put up and weighs less than six pounds. I can put it up quickly and quietly even in the dark and if I find a hot area, I can put it up and sit for several hours and not screw up the area. I don't normally sit in the same exact place more than once. I believe that if you over-use a stand site, the deer soon start to pattern you. Have you noticed that you normally see more deer the first time you use one particular stand?

Wasn't from a tree stand, but: while deer hunting last year from a ground stand under a dead fall I had an interesting encounter with a couple of spruce grouse.
Each evening, these two grouse would make their way through the woods and pass within several feet of my stand. Well, on the third day out, I heard them coming
and this time, straight for my position. I held as still as possible until one of them was inches away from my feet. The second had hopped up onto the dead fall
above me and proceeded up the log until he was directly overhead. Next thing I know, this guy decides to jump down off the log...right onto my head! Actually
stood there for a little while surveying things while his mate rummaged around by my feet. Far be it from me to eat anything so goofy. I sat and watched until
the two of them slowly proceeded on their way.

Ive never had the use for a climber or a store bought stand. I have a great homemade pattern for stands, but I honestly prefer no stand or tree pegs at all, that way you can keep the deer guessing at all times,I would rather just use branch's to climb up and a big branch to sit on or stand on for that few hours Im in my stands, Why spend the money when you don't have to!

Had one to try for a while a couple of years ago. It worked okay, but my main complaint was that the tree had to be pretty straight without branches for as high as you wanted to go. There's not many trees like that where I want to hunt. It would work for gun hunters where you could cover a lot of area, but for bowhunters, the type of trees I like to get into are to brushy for climbing stands. Plus, with a naked tree, you look like a big pimple sticking out from the trunk.

I am planning to purchase a climbing tree stand. I have never hunted from a tree stand before. How safe are they? Are they really easy to set up and climb in? Any info given would be highly appreciated.

I was bowhunting for moose in Quebec last week. A Cooper's hawk grabbed a red squirrel 10 feet from me on an old dead tree. The squirrel turned and fought back with the hawk causing the hawk to drop him back on to the old tree. The squirrel dove into a hole in the tree with the hawk circling above us. After an hour the squirrel stuck his head out, looked about and took off.
PS An hour later a S hook straightened out and the tree stand fell 25 feet to the ground. Thank God I had my safety harness on! Quite a morning!

Couple of things - I hunt in a bowhunting only area so there are no shotgunners around. When conditions are right, I like to rattle and use the grunt call. Things I have rattled in - foxes, coyotes several "hunters" with crossbows looking for the deer fight and once the farmer who owned the property wandered over to "see what the racket was." One mornig, I got into my stand well before first light and sat in the dark for about a half an hour. When legal shooting time arrived, I took my bow out of the case and gave a few soft ticks on the rattling horns. Nothing came in to the horns, but I had the uneasy feeling that someone was watching me. I slowly looked around and just about fell out of my treestand. There was a great horned owl to my left, not three feet from my face, staring at me! I don't know if he was there all the time or whether he came in while I was sitting in the dark, but I never heard a sound.

I was parked under large birch tree tryin to decide whether to use the 150 or 130 gr. loads in the 270 when I heard something coming through a thick patch on my left. I drop a shell in the gun and slowly lock the bolt then do my best impression of a tree as I wait for the beast to break cover. This was my first time out and as you can guess I was very excited. Well it turns out to be the biggest porky pine Ive ever seen. He walks to about 10 feet of where Im standing, causually looks up at me and just walks around me.

Just curious to know about the most interesting evening or morning that you have spent in your deer stands.... Last nite I had 14 Turkeys beneath me (What a sight) Then they ventured into the hardwoods behind me and and each and everyone of them began to roost, what a racket that was with alot leaves still on the trees, Other then their wings hitting the branchs not 1 vocal noise did they make. When I was in the local sporting store the other day I was talking to a guy that said a hawk come in the tree he was sitting in and attacked his spider on his serving, he also said he had a fox pee on his tree I guess that fox was marking his territory cause the guy was also useing a fox scent on his boots.Well thats the latest Ive seen and heard how bout the rest of ya's????

Hi Andy, Take a look at the Rocky cornstalkers or the
bear claws, the bear claw has more insulation and
a different tread !! I have a pair of each,
the cornstalkers are about 6 yrs old and are great,
no leaks, no cuts, just a great boot, they been put
through the test here hunting and have done 6
waterfowl trip through the stubble fields of Sask. The boots are made of cordura nylon, cambrelle
fabric inside to absorb sweat and they are lined
with gore tex, the only negative thing i would
say about the boot, is the camo dye on the nylon
does not last, which is not a big deal !! You might want to check the Sports Authority, i
bought my 2nd pair there for under $80.00, they
were clearing them out !! If not u might want to
check Bass Pro in the U.S, i think they are giving
us a exhange rate of around $1.30, have u tried Al
Flahert`s on Dufferin ??? The only draw back of the leather, its to easy
to cut, the cordura is tuff and light weight plus
it does not absorbs water like leather will.
Good Hunting .......Dave

I'm looking for suggestions for hunting boots. My 10 year-old pair has been destroyed by mice so I figure I should have them replaced before I venture forth in search of deer. What's the state of the art these days? I'm looking for ones with leather uppers, heavy sole and insulated (Gortex, I guess). But I have two problems. 1) I wear a size 15 and 2) anything that looks suitable is well over 200 bucks. Anybody have any suggestions for stores with a good selection (mostly for point 1), It's not gonna be easy finding the size I need). I already checked LeBarons on Woodbine. What brands are you people wearing and happy with?

At first I used old wheel weights that I got from a local
garage. Just tied them onto some heavy lbs. test fishing line
and I was in business. This year I got a piece of hard wood and a 2" drill
bit and drilled holes about 1 to 1 1/2" deep. I then melted down the wheel weights
and poured them into the mould and made a holder for the line and set it in before the lead
got hard. After I took and axe and split the wood to get the weights out. They work
great! Good luck and happy hunting.

They do sell several types of "anchors" that you can tie on.
When I hunt ponds & have no way to get the deeks out I tie 3 decoys together and on the first on I tie the anchor. To the anchor I tie another long lenth of decoy line which I leave in loose coils when I toss them out. Then I tie this to a nearby bush or what ever. Its tricky (especially in the dark) toosing 3 deeks out at a time plus the anchor but comes with practice. I use the long cord to pull the anchor in with the deeks attached when I'm done.
Sometimes I have to re throw but if one goes in wrong side up then a tug on the line usually will flip it back over. One note though: Decoy line knots seem to untie very easily so make sure you tie 5-6 knots or you can lose those anchors from the bobbing in the waves. Bob

I live in Oklahoma, U.S.A. and have 10 Beagles, but all I've ever run is cottontails. We don't get much snow down here, so my hounds don't get much practice on snow. I am trying to work up a hare hunting trip, maybe to Michigan. I am talking to a Beagler from there. I think it would be a BLAST. I just enjoy hearing the race and if I got to shoot a hare, that would just be iceing on the cake.

I know I'm not a regular contributor at this site, but I check in quite often. My interest in hunting started as a kid when I hunted chuck on my grandfathers farm. My first job after high school was working at a gun shop (Lovett's, in Kitchener) where I developed an interest in handgun shooting and reloading, and competed for almost ten years locally. Also did some hunting for deer and ducks, but after leaving Lovett's, got a job at the local humane society, where I ended up as the Cruelty Inspector (proof that love of animals and hunting are not mutually exclusive. In fact, I know a number of veterinarians who hunt). My deer hunting continued for a while, despite the fact that I was often able to fill my freezer with fresh road-kill deer. Now I work as an investigator for a professional organization. My interest in hunting and shooting waned after I took up Steelheading 10 years ago, but this year my 15 year old son got his hunting licence on his own initiative, and he's begging me to take him out. Couldn't swing any trips for chucks this year, sold off a lot of my guns over the years and finances are slim to let me re-build my collection. I hope to get him out this winter for rabbits and upland game, though, as he is really keen, and I like to encourage his outdoor pursuits. Always on the lookout for a good deal on rifles and shotguns. Maybe a moose hunt is in our future.

I currently am using the MAGELLAN 3000XL.
Spend the extra money and get this unit instead of the 2000. I have used this unit now for about a year and I have not had any problems with it locking on to satellites (even in nasty black cedar swamps), eating batteries too quickly, etc. It has more screens than you probably will ever need and the 4 AA batteries do last an awful long time. This unit comes with a 12V power adaptor that can be used in your car, boat, ATV etc. This is a really good feature to have if you are going to be using it a lot. It also comes with a mounting bracket (I mounted this on my boat) that is really handy. You are getting a better machine, as well as getting these "extras" for the additional $. I have had a chance to compare it to the EAGLE (side-by-side) and I personaly find the 3000XL to be more "user friendly". Well worth the money. PS. If you are at all unsure of how to make it "go", invest in the video that you can also purchase with it. (Use the video as a buying leverge tool ... like if you include the video n/c I might be inclined to buy your GPS here and now Mr. Salesman).

The previous deadline has been extended for the writing of the FAC exam without having to take the course also.
Previous deadline was OCT 1st after which you would not be able to only write the exam to get your FAC. You would have to take the course AND THEN write the exam. The new deadline has been extended till FEB 1st 1999.
I believe my sources to be correct but you might be best to check anyways cause you've got to find out how to get your new FAC and arrange to take the exam soon anyways.
Don't delay! Bob

Hi Tack How's this for a quick response! (minus the time to type this)
I'm 44 yrs old, drive a bus for ParaTranspo here in Ottawa where I've worked for 6.5 yrs. (Thats 6 point 5...not 65...)
Before that I sold Real Estate for Royal Lepage, before that I managed a womens shoe store for 10 years!
I've hunted since I was 9yrs old thanks to my Dad who I seem to only be able to drag out hunting for the first week of the rifle hunt when I hunt with a great group of 8-12 guys from all backgrounds in WMU 58 in the Griffith/Calabogie area. (West of Renfrew)
My Dad has spent much of the past 20years (or more) handgun shooting at a club here in Ottawa and at various "shoots" they go to aroung Ontario. My first love was Partridge hunting which I've done since "the beginning"! I did start with my Dad on the occassional duck hunt but too young to "carry" then.
For 20+ years I've deer hunted with a rifle and for about the past 4 yrs with a bow. My duck hunting is nearing its end cause my 12 year old yellow lab is close to the end & the "wife" says no to another dog. Its not the same hunting ducks near ponds without a good dog.
My son who is 9 yrs old has hunted with me for about 5 yrs now! ( First year he rode in a large back pack when he got tired! Ha! And my wife thought she'd stop me from hunting by making me babysit. Little did she know I was just "preparing" my future hunting companion!) I'm not sure what this year will bring because I'm a little disappointed in myself for last year; I spent more time in front of this darn PC than I got out hunting. :-(
But things are looking up for this year...maybe I'll get a laptop!! (Only kidding...the day I bring a PC to my treestand will be the day I quit hunting!)
Seriously though (yea right!) I'm heading out this Saturday and my son will probably be tagging along. Heading up near the huntcamp for daylight. First for some ducks, then try a few lakes for some speckles with the possibilty of some partridge mixed in. Well there; now you know my life story. %^) Bob

I saw an interesting string on another sight tonight that I thought I'd try to start. It appeared to have a very successful response. What do all the users of this site do? Professionally, Backgrounds, Specific Interests In Hunting or Shooting. Myself, I'm 31 yrs. old and a Sworn Peace Officer for the University of Toronto Police for the past 7yrs. (wow!! that's scary) I'm a Certified F.A.C. Instructor, I hunt both large & small game and compete in the International Defencive Pistol Asso. My wife of four years, works at the Guelph General and I have a wonderful turbo-driven 4x4 nine month old daughter. Specifically hunting, I was a fanatic chuck hunter prior to my marriage (every available day was divoted, shift work accutually helped) Now that my daughter has arrived the only chucks I've seen is commuting to work, I 'll be working on next year. The past four years however has brought moose and deer into the fold. Moose is in MWU 54 Halibuton Forest, "Golden Nugget Hunt Camp". Deer is MWU 80 Rockford (Owen Sound), the home range of the Nugget Lake fellas. Where, I might add with pride, I took two does last year at approx.30yrd. with double 00. Had I had my Lever 44mag. thirty mins. earlier I would have a beautiful rack at home. (That's all I have to say about that....) Well let's see who/what's out there? It is surely the best way for networking. Stay Safe , Tack

Hi Ron If you can then get a few. Maybe 3 to 6.(Not too much expense & if you like it then you can buy more) I must say though that its not absolutely necessary in some situations.
I hunt small ponds and have "always" carried in some. Sometimes I put in 3, other times 10-12. Thing is where I hunt you don't really need them cause the ducks fly over anyways!
Usually when they can see the deeks is when they clear the treetops not too far away. It might help to get a few to circle and come back for a second look.
It can help at times and at other times not help but its still fun to put them out and helps build the anticipation for the hunt! Hunt safe and good luck! Bob

Hi Kern, I just got back from the pre-season goose hunt. I stayed for the full 5 days. We were 5 the first day. We managed to get 13 geese altogether. That day was not so bad for us. The remaining 4 days I was alone. For some odd reason the geese would just not come in. In four days I managed to fire just 6 shots. I did not get any geese the remaining 4 days. The geese were just flying south of where I was. My calling and decoys would not bring them in. I guess they were spooked because of the first day. We were hunting in a farmers cornfield on Lake Simcoe. How did you do? I can't wait for Sept. 25!

To Whom It May Concern: The "adventure" described herein took place October 5 -10 1997 in the Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan. The "outfitter was Tom Plante of Fir River Holdings. The
following correspondence falls into the "I Thought You Should Know Category". Those persons named here are a disgrace to all outfitters/guides. They took the trip
of a lifetime and turned it into a disgusting experience. If this had occurred in the USA the complaint would be handled in court. As it is, my only resource amounts to
this and many other letters. I also plan to attend outdoor shows and distribute this evaluation. To preface my remarks please consider that I had prepared and dreamed of such a trip for many years. Financial and time constraints had delayed those plans until
last fall. Sometime ago I began researching different options as to outfitters and locations offering trophy whitetail deer hunting. I was introduced to Fir River
Holdings early in 1997 when Tom Plante and Glenn Schultz came to Pennsylvania. During that visit we discussed a muzzleloader hunt for deer and bear. The
promises and conditions presented convinced me to go to Hudson Bay for the trip of a lifetime. I was assured that I would be able to hunt for both species in areas where stands were regularly monitored to determine the quality and number of animals visiting the
fields and bait stations. In reality, no scouting had been done and there were no bear stands at all. I was assigned to eight(8) different deer stands in five(5) days. The
hay at all but one of these stands had not been touched by a deer of ANY size. Most had been in place less then a week. In fact, I helped the guide erect the eighth
one the morning of October 10. With respect to my effort it should be noted that I hunted 82% of the daylight hours available. I have been a professional wildlife manager for 32.5 years, and know
that mature whitetail deer do not respond well to anything new. Even with this in mind I went where I was told. Further complicating the situation was my guide assignment. He arrived in Hudson Bay the same day that I did--he did not know where the stands were located, nor
did he hunt or really approve of killing deer. Marty was a good companion but that does not qualify him as a guide. He may or may not have been licensed since he
lived in Prince Albert. The accommodations (meals and lodging) were also poorly organized. Tom first told me I would be taking my meals in town but that did not happen. For all but one
breakfast I fixed toast and coffee at camp. I made all my own lunches. Evening meals with as many as six(6) guests were served at camp after being prepared
elsewhere. Following dinner EVERYONE left --- leaving dirty dishes, pots, pans, and cleanup for me. The lodging itself was adequate, but the camp was filthy. The
food counter, beds and window sills were littered with dead and dying flies. The floor was covered with mud. It got worse every day. Minuses can outnumber pluses only so long before a correction is in order. When I was assigned another new stand for Friday morning I knew my request for a new
approach were being ignored. Not knowing what else to do I asked to leave--three(3) days early. There were no questions asked, no unpleasant words,
explanation, or excuses--in fact, there was no discussion at all. About 11:00 a.m. on Friday Tom took my plane tickets to the travel agency. I never saw or heard
from him again. About 9:00 p.m. the same evening Marty called and said we were going to Saskatoon right then. We arrived there about 1:00 am Saturday morning.
This forced me to rent a motel for two(2) nights at $50.00 per night because my return flight was scheduled for Sunday at 7:00 a.m. The rescheduling was an
additional $75.00. Conversations during the visit and the inquiries upon arriving home revealed additional disturbing information. It seems that Tom Plante was directly involved in the
death of another person, in addition he was recently hospitalized (August 1997) for substance abuse and is a self-confessed alcoholic. He often brags about beating
up LAW OFFICERS (i.e. RCMP) and anyone else who dares cross him. Plante constantly berated other outfitters and implied that I better not talk to any of them.
Considering his character I am glad I did not take the threat lightly. It seems that every phase of the operation was misrepresented in some way. For example, Mr. Plante is himself not a licensed outfitter--he was using license #F2016
which belongs to Glenn Schultz. It is my guess that this correspondence will do little to change that. I honestly could not have been more disappointed as I watched
my dream become a nightmare. Hopefully I can see to it that anyone planning such a trip can avoid these people and anyone associated with them. Sincerely, David W. Brown RD#4 Box 200 Westfield, Pa 16950 (814) 326-4553 P.S. I am willing to discuss this situation further. Feel free to contact me at any time

Hi Kern, Yeah I know the Oshawa/Whitby area all too well. There are a lot of geese in that area. Too many hunters opening season though. I have a cottage up in the Lake Simcoe area and that is where we do our goose hunting with my other 3 hunting partners. The farmers have plowed their fields and that has made the geese look for other feeding areas. As for your calling geese with a caller, just keep practicing. What has helped us was going out and buying a tape that explained the different types of calls. We are still practicing ourselves. We have gotten better with practice and we have been able to call geese in. Best of luck to you in the hunt!

Hi Frank, Unfortunatly I live out in Courtice so scouting the areas where the early goose season is most times isnt possible. I am thinking of using this weekend to try to get out and do some scouting though. As for geese, I dont know if you drive around the Oshawa /Whitby area, but there are always hundreds of the critters in the sky at night and in the morning. I must admit though, it would appear as though there arent as many on the move this year as last. The same for puddle ducks...I think its due to the excessive precip we had last year compared to this year although that would explain why the geese numbers are down!
Im still working on my calling, hopefully this year they will come to the call rather than flee from it :)

I dont't know what is happening but about 3 weeks ago the geese were flying in by the thousands. Up until last week there have been very few that have been flying overhead or landing in the fields. They are all right when they say that GPS's won't work well under cover (heavy brush). You must have a relatively clear area. The unit must be able to lock onto at least 3 satellites for a fix. As long as you can reach a relatively clear (or really thin brush) area you should be O.K. I have just purchased the new Magellan ColourTrak 12 parallel channel GPS unit. I have used it on my boat. Let me tell you that it has been extremely accurate for me out on the water. I will be using it for hunting. I have been extremely happy with this unit. It is not cheap though. It sells for between $399 - $427. You have to shop around.

I am planning on purchasing the Browning BAR Mark II 30.06 semi auto. I plan to pick it up at the hunting show. Does anyone own such a gun? Can anyone provide me with some feedback on this gun? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I hunt in two areas for the prehunt. These are areas 76 and 78. At Darlington, you will have to park in a designated spot in order to hunt there. At times there can be a lot of people trying to hunt there. They really don't have a lot of blinds. Good luck to you.

I plan to do at least one day at Darlington too Nick. I went there the other day to have a look but didnt get as far as the marsh. The park ranger was at the main gate so i just asked him a few questions about the hunt. Im surprised they dont have an early season that close to the lake...with all the geese problems and all around here.

Oh well... another course and another exam....why dont they make it as difficult to get a drivers licence!! I feel safer walkin in the bush during the hunting season than I do driving to work every morning!!! At least when (IF) bill C68 is passed into law, our hole country will be rid of violent crimes carried out with guns. No longer will we have to lock our doors at night. The scary part of all this is the people we have elected to lead this country actually believe that crap....nuf said.

Yes Kern, you are correct the F.A.C. is for aquiring a firearm. This includes purchasing (retail or private) borrowing (not withstanding "direct supervision") and receiving via a will. Yes, the FAC is not required for transportation or storage. The exam is manditory for "ALL" renewals and first time applications. If yours is about to expire soon, the concern you will have is to submit your renewal prior to that date. An expire FAC has no consideration attached to it. Thus the 28 day waiting peroid applies and the fifty ($50) dollar fee also applies. When the renewal is submitted prior to the expire date the fee is halved and it can be issued as soon as the process is completed. Again, yes you must successfully complete the exam.
Safe Shooting!

months ago and the place was loaded with geese. The staff advised me

Why don't you ask something easy like "When does duck saeson start?"!
;-)
If I remember right...Yes you need a permit which will be called a "FPC" which is a Firearm POSSESSION Certificate. This doesn't allow purchase of a new gun. Forget if the one allowing purchase is called the same or not.
Before a certain date you only need to write the exam. After that same certain date (?) you will have to take the course & the exam. The course & exam now cover handguns/muzzle loaders so even though you might never use one you are required to know how to handle as well as you know your trusty old shotgun!
I think the "certain" date is this fall some time but I could be wrong. Getting close! Bob

Im not 100% versed in the new gun law, but i was wondering.... If someone decides they have all the guns they need for what ever they do ie: trap & skeet, hunting or competition hand gun, do they have to renew their FAC???? My understanding of present legislation is that the FAC is only required for aquiring a fire arm not owner ship or transportation. Also...does everyone have to take this FAC exam??? Mine expires next year. If I renew before it expires do I have to take the exam???

My question is technical in nature. Relating to the.308 WIN (7.62mm NATO) and the 7.62x39mm Russian. The diameters are the same, right? Well I recently saw in print that (in imperial measurements) the NATO round is .308 and the Russian is .310 . What would the likelyhood of accuracy and engaving be, by loading a NATO bullet into a Russan case? Not withstanding, bullet weight to twist ratio. The reasoning for posing the question.....7.62x39mm is maufactured on average with a 123 gr. bullet. My curiousity is to load a mid-weight to full- weight bullet of .308 WIN into a 7.62 x 39mm case and determine performace. I also know that the bullet will take up more space in the throat of the case due to the weight factor. Along with added weight, there maybe an addition to the charge required.
Reasoning: have a harder hitting round, out of a light, inexpensive, rugged rifle. Any thoughts???

WELCOME TO THE SPORT!! Here is a few idea that worked great for me and fello hunters. Assuming you have already obtained you Outdoors Card and you FAC. The next suggestion is to join the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters. For $35.00 a year (membership fee) you are automatically enrolled in a two million dollar ($2,000,000) third party liability insurance policy. This is in effect when acctively hunting or fishing. Next encourage your hunting buddies to join so when you follow my next step they will be covered. Have a permission form typed up ready to present to the land owner for viewing. It is a genaric form for the landowner to fill out, starting with "I ......... give the listed below to hunt for the game listed below on .........(property)..... " . Following this, in the body of the form, include " I understand that all of the names listed below are members of the Ont. Fed. of Ang. & Hun.. I also understand that as a member of this Fed. they are insured with a $2 mill. third party liability policy. Then provide a section for the land owner's signature and date. ( I also include a phrase to the effect that this agreement is for a period of one year, or unless other wise indicated. Renewals consist of a phone call with an agreement that the "old" form is updated) Always use carbon paper and supply a copy to the landowner. Keep the original. Some Townships require written permission on you when hunting on anothers property in that Township. Research this ,the onus is on you. I also list the common type of game found on that area so they can just check off the appropriate ones. (don't pressure too hard for other game, I have hunted "chucks" at places that the owner or others hunt) Next allow an area for a description of the are you are allowed on.(I had one farmer leasing property al over the county some farms we could some we could not) For clarity, have a map provided (make copies, at least two, attach to both agreements) I'm sure that's enough for now, if you are interested let me and I'll send you a copy. WHERE ?? Farm land (pasture & curtain crops) chucks eat nothing but the best ... translates to cash crops and takes money out of farmers pocket. Thus you could be welcomed with open arms. Careful not to be paid, I believe a trappers licence would be needed. Good Luck & Safe Hunting

You have the right idea unfortunately your geography is a little off. Townships in Ontario have the ability to regulate the calibres used for hunting. The reasoning used is based on population. The area is reasonably set as a line across South to South Central Ontario. I can specifically recall for curtain, 400 hwy at 89 hwy traveling west to Lake Ontario. (more or less following 89 hwy. Iam not sure about the area to the east at this time. If I am correct the are south of this line is huntable with calibres .275 and smaller. This is not withstanding the use of shotguns.

Andy,
I'll try not to be long winded. I'm an Instructor/Examiner for the Canadian Firearms Safety Course. The other postings curtainly have the right idea, depending on your background the course is well worth your time and money. Yes the class work book supplies all the facts needed for the test procedures, however, invaluable information and experience is obtained when attending the class. Your qestions about law passage, yes you need to know/have a "working" knowledge of relivent Firearms Legislation. The course is designed as "entry level" or introductry class. It starts with the basics and introduces the student to firearms and action types "most commonly found in sporting firearms". As an example my last class had a gentleman in it who had to renew his lapsed FAC and decided to attend the class. His background was extensive hunting and competion handgun. His score on the written test 100% but due to some bad habits/complacency the practical/handling test 91%. Test Format:
Written 25 true/false 25 multiple answer
Practical/Handling - identification of specified
ammunition
- handling of specified firearms
(two 1 long gun, 1 handgun)
while following instructor's
direction (instructor's
choice of firearm)
- present knowledge and
understanding of legal
transportation requirements
for restricted firearms

If you have never handled a revolver or semi-automaitc handgun, I would strongly suggest you take the course, as part of the exam invloves showing the examiner the safe way of handling both types of firearms as well as rifles & shotguns. As for muzzle loaders...they are basically the same a long guns (rifles). I was an OHA qualified club level range officer & safety instructor, and believe me you do develop bad habits over the years and the course did wonders to refresh my memory. Any more questions, do not hesitate to ask.
